Regional population projections

Urban areas grow, peripheral regions lose population
Number and proportion of older people rising in all regions
Rural areas are losing people of working age

The most recent regional population projection covers the period from 2021 to 2050 and was produced on behalf of the Austrian Conference on Spatial Planning (ÖROK) by Statistics Austria in cooperation with Joanneum Research Forschungsgesellschaft mbH. It is structured according to the statutory cities, political districts of Austria as well as the municipal districts of Vienna, i.e. a total of 121 regions. Due to the low number of inhabitants, the statutory city of Rust was combined with the district of Eisenstadt-Umgebung to form one region in the projection. A total of six districts (four in Lower Austria and one each in Upper Austria and Vorarlberg) were divided into two regions each in order to aggregate the 35 NUTS-3 regions of Austria from the projection results. The projection also includes the characteristics age, sex and country of birth (born in Austria or abroad).
